We could create a logo following consultancy, initially for one purpose only such as a website header. Even then, a colour palette and complementary typefaces might be necessary.
Or at the other end of the scale, we could develop a brand strategy which could include anything from in-depth research to immersion and workshops. From the strategy we would create a brand identity including logo variations for different scenarios, supporting graphics and other brand elements such as photography and copywriting. And then we could implement the brand identity by applying it to different things like brochures, stationery, websites, social media accounts, vehicle livery etc. We can also create a brand guidelines document, with rules for the practical usage of the logo and brand identity. It ensures consistency, which is particularly useful for when third parties get involved in future.
